Overcoming Infertility With Technology

Overcoming Infertility With Technology

Pregnancy comes easy to many women but to some who have had issues in their reproductive system, it is a challenge. It takes a miracle for a woman like Miki who have had PID in her early 20’s. Now in her early 30’s, happily married, she wishes to have a baby but seems too impossible with the impact of PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) to her reproductive system. Scarring in her uterus just makes it impossible to conceive.

While mothers ask what to what can my 3 month old baby eat, Miki asks a totally different question. How to conceive when I was diagnosed with infertility? Infertility issues are a growing problem to recent young couples. For women like Miki, natural conception is not an option but technology offers many possibilities like IUI and IVF, and hiring a surrogate mother. This pregnancy options can be very expensive but well worth it.

What is IVF?

From Mayo Clinic – Invitro Fertilization (IVF) is a complicated process that takes series of procedures to treat fertility issues and assist a couple towards conception. Mature eggs are taken from the woman and sperm from the man, taken to the lab and fertilized in a petri dish under simulated temperature.

One cycle of IVF takes 4-6 weeks to be completed. Couples are expected to be at the clinic for half a day or more for egg and sperm extraction.

What is IUI?

From American Pregnancy – IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination. This is a fertility treatment that involves assisting the sperm into the woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. In this case, only the man’s sperm is gathered, placed in a long slim tube-like device. The device penetrates the woman through her vagina and straight to the uterus. The goal is to increase the number of live sperm cells to fertilize the egg.

Difference between IVF and IUI?

  • IUI involves the man’s sperm being directly injected into the woman’s uterus. Only the man’s semen are collected in this procedure. IUI is less expensive than IVF.
  • IVF collects both specimen from man and woman, mature egg cells from woman and semen from man. Fertilization happens outside the woman’s body but in a lab that simulates the woman’s uterus. IVF is more expensive than IUI
