Helping Overweight Women Get Pregnant by Losing Weight

Fat woman exercising

Sports doctors are certain: Overweight women can increase their chances of pregnancy by up to 80 percent through weight reduction.

The cheapest and most effective fertility program for overweight women is losing weight. In Germany, 35 percent of women of childbearing age from 20 to 39 years are overweight, and 20 percent are even obese. They suffer more from menstrual irregularities and infertility and are more likely to have to expect complications at birth. Therefore, if they wish to have children, they should:

  • reduce calorie intake
  • pay attention to a balanced and healthy exercise
  • be involved in sports
  • and move as much as possible in everyday life.

For those considering the use of weight loss supplements, it is best to read honest reviews about the product like Protetox reviews. Talk to your doctor about the weight loss supplement you want to include in your weight loss reduction program.

Losing weight promotes fertility

In order to reduce risks and increase fertility, the German Society for Sports Medicine and Prevention (DGSP) advises overweight people to lose weight and exercise. A weight reduction of 4.3 to 10.2 kilograms within six months increases the chance of pregnancy by 80 percent. The risk of miscarriage is reduced from 75 to 18 percent. Losing weight is also a very cost-effective endeavor compared to traditional fertility treatment. “This is a milestone in fertility treatment for overweight and obese women,” says PD Dr. Ulrike Korsten-Reck from the Medical University of Freiburg, a specialist in this field and chairwoman of the Commission “Women’s Sport” in the DGSP, which has developed recommendations.

Intervention program: Losing weight for more fertility

Effective weight loss begins with a change in diet and more exercise. A so-called intervention program for weight loss and increased physical activity should best be discussed with the doctor. Thus, losing weight and increasing activity not only increases fertility but also performance during and after pregnancy. An above-average weight gain during pregnancy can also be counteracted by a reasonable intervention program. With weight loss, the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure decreases, mood swings (e.g. postpartum depression) is reduced and the body feeling is improved.

Sports before, during, and after pregnancy

According to the DGSP, these sports are particularly recommended for the exercise program to lose weight for an increase in fertility, as well as during and after pregnancy: hiking, Nordic walking, jogging, cycling, cross-country skiing, and gymnastics. Women prone to edema should go swimming, but only at a water temperature between 20 and 33 degrees. Also important: is a sufficient intake of carbohydrates and fluids.
