Fertility Window
What is the fertile window? How does it affect my ability to get pregnant?
Your fertile window, as defined by Dr. Wilcox in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1995, is the 6 days of the month during which intercourse can lead to pregnancy. Using the data from Dr. Wilcox study, Dunson, et al., published data in Statistics of Medicine in 2001 showing day specific probabilities of conception during the fertile window. See chart below for the day specific probability of pregnancy for each day of the fertile window.
The probability of conception increases as one approaches the day of ovulation, with your cumulative probability of getting pregnant totaling 80% on the 4 days prior to ovulation. This is because sperm can live for 5 to 7 days in the reproductive tract 4. Therefore timing intercourse appropriately before ovulation maximizes your chance of conception.
Proper identification of your individual fertility window may shorten the time to conception from 6 months to one month for the majority of women (3 out of 4 women)6,7.
It is also important to have a high quality of sperm to fertilize the egg. For this reason many doctors and specialist recommend having intercourse every other day starting from the first day the OV- Watch® reads "Fertile Day 1", so that there is a greater quantity of sperm. There is no doubt that intercourse on multiple days throughout the six-day Fertility Window raises the overall probability of successful conception. This is where the reproductive health of the male plays a significant role in the success of the couple. Measurement criteria include sperm-count, motility, cell morphology and general composition of the semen. Since sperm concentrations drop with increasing frequency of intercourse, it is a good idea to have reliable information regarding the man's reproductive health to make the right decisions on timing and frequency.
