FEATURED STORIES

OV-Watch & the American Pregnancy Association

OV-Watch is now recognized  by the American Pregnancy Association. You can see us here.
This is what Brad Imler, Ph.D. President of the American Pregnancy Association is saying about timing of intercourse:

"In order to maximize your chances of conception each month, intercourse needs to take place during the 4 days before ovulation, which are the most fertile days of the cycle, so that the sperm is waiting for the egg. "

Since OV-Watch is the only device that can alert a woman to the 4 days before ovulation, then WHY use anything else??

Featured Success Story

I just found out this morning (6/21/07) that I am pregnant. My husband and I have been trying since April of 2005. I could not understand those ovulation sticks and was so frustrated. Then Babycenter.com sent me an email about the OV-Watch and I was so excited to order it right away. This is my fourth month using it. I was in New York (away from my husband) when the watch showed Fertile Day 1 and I was very worried. But I was back at home by Fertile Day 4. I guess all I needed was to relax on my vacation and relieve stress. One week after I returned from my trip (and did not know I was pregnant), we ended up buying two Yorkshire terrier puppies (10 weeks old). After realizing how much work they were, I thought that now would not be a good time to become pregnant. Of course, after three years of trying, it happened right after we got these puppies. I guess that is why they say that it comes when least expected. We are thrilled and very thankful for the OV-Watch. I highly recommend it to all of my friends and cannot stop talking about it! Thank you so much for everything!

July's Q &A
Dr. Bates,

I am using opk's, charting my BBT and using the OV-Watch. All three are coming up with different ovulation dates. What would cause this? Amanda

Amanda,

All three of those methods of ovulation detection are testing different things. While LH urine kits look for the presence of lutenizing hormone in the urine 12-36 hours before ovulation, and BBT tells you a temperature rise after ovulation has occurred, OV-Watch detects the chemical surge of chloride ions on the skin approximately 6 days before you ovulate, which is an earlier predictor of a woman’s fertility.Urine sticks predict ovulation by detecting your  LH surge. That surge typically comes about 24 hours before you ovulate. If you did not get a positive on your urine sticks, you are part of the 30% of women that don't from time to time. In fact, urine testing for the LH surge may miss ovulation in up to 1/3 of women (23- 32%) and 1 in 10 women  (9.7%) may see false positive results.  “Even if the LH surge identifies a day with good probability of conception, the brief window of time identified, prospectively limits the opportunity to have multiple acts of intercourse before ovulation.”

If you are taking your temperature to find when you have ovulated, the rise in temperature only indicates that you have ovulated. No conceptions have been documented in the medical literature on the day after ovulation. In fact, recent evidence indicates that charting your temperature is a highly inaccurate means to detect ovulation.  The lowest point of the temperature and subsequent rise may occur up to 6 days before ovulation but can also be seen 4 days after ovulation when there is not a chance of pregnancy.

 Good Luck,

 Dr. Bates
